Integrated environmental monitoring system based on innovative forecasting techniques using AI/ML algorithms and IoT sensor networks.
SINTESI is a research and development project aimed at creating an innovative system for environmental monitoring and a better understanding of the territory. The project integrates IoT sensor networks, image acquisition systems, artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms, and digital tools for collecting, processing and visualising environmental data.
Its objective is to monitor a range of parameters in a coordinated way, including air quality, weather conditions, rainfall, water levels and materials transported by waterways. The collected data feed forecasting models and digital representations of the territory, turning field measurements into useful information for environmental protection and decision support.
The project studied and integrated innovative sensing technologies designed to operate within distributed, reliable and economically sustainable networks. It also included the development of the software architecture for data acquisition and processing, AI-based forecasting models and a web dashboard for consulting environmental information, displaying maps and charts, analysing changes over time, and accessing spatial analysis and Digital Twin functions.
The prototypes were tested in real operational settings to assess their stability, data quality, transmission continuity and ability to provide information that can support territorial protection activities.
Blue Eco Line developed the system dedicated to the visual monitoring of waterways and the transport of floating debris. The solution uses cameras and computer vision algorithms to acquire and analyse images of the waterway, identifying woody material and other objects transported by the current. Processing is performed close to the monitoring point, reducing dependence on connectivity and enabling the device to operate autonomously.
The technology was verified in an operational environment and under different hydrological conditions, including situations involving increased flow and floating debris. The project activities led to an integrated system capable of collecting, transmitting, processing and presenting data from different sources.
The results demonstrate the potential of combining IoT sensors, artificial intelligence and digital tools to improve territorial monitoring. The technologies developed can be further advanced to support alert systems, civil protection activities, waterway management and decision-making processes within public authorities.
The project partnership consists of Tea Group – Tecnologie Elettroniche Avanzate S.r.l., Magenta S.r.l., Blue Eco Line S.r.l. and CNR – Institute for BioEconomy (IBE).
The SINTESI project was co-funded by the PR FESR Toscana 2021-2027, under Policy Objective 1, Specific Objective 1, Action 1.1.4, through R&D Call 2 – 2023 “R&D projects for MSMEs and Mid-caps”.
